Bluegrass Vascular Announces Featured Paper in the Journal of Vascular Surgery Reporting on the Use of the Surfacer® System

May 21, 2022

San Antonio, TX – Bluegrass Vascular Technologies, a private medical technology company focused on innovating lifesaving devices and methods for vascular access procedures, announced today the publication of a paper featured on the cover of the June 2022 issue of the Journal of Vascular Surgery (JVS) which reports on the use the Surfacer® System to perform an Inside-Out® procedure to obtain central venous access in a hemodialysis patient presenting with severely symptomatic superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome. The procedure was performed by Dr. Alexandros Mallios, Director, Vascular Access Center at the Hôpital Paris Saint-Joseph in Paris, France and his team.

“Our paper is the first to report on a fully extraanatomical, minimally invasive approach resulting in the bridging of a functioning upper extremity access to the SVC,” stated Dr. Mallios. “The use of the Surfacer System enabled us to quickly and efficiently obtain central venous access after two previous attempts to recanalize the central vein occlusion using other approaches were unsuccessful.”

“The case reported presented by Dr. Mallios and his colleagues further demonstrates the broad clinical utility of the Surfacer System to help facilitate gaining venous access in patients with central venous obstructions,” said Gabriele Niederauer, Ph.D., CEO and President of Bluegrass Vascular. “We congratulate Dr. Mallios and his team on having a featured covered story in JVS associated with this interesting case which included the use of the Surfacer System.”

About the Surfacer® Inside-Out® Access Catheter System

The Surfacer System is designed to reliably, efficiently and repeatedly gain central venous access by inserting the Surfacer System through the right femoral vein and navigating it up through the patient’s venous system with an exit point in the right internal jugular vein, the optimal location for placing a central venous catheter. This proprietary Inside-Out approach allows for the placement and maturation of permanent arteriovenous access options that are associated with improved patient outcomes and reduced cost of care for both hospitals and hemodialysis providers. The Surfacer System has received FDA De Novo device clearance in the US and is CE marked in Europe.  The device is currently distributed in North America and Europe by  Merit Medical, a global manufacturer and distributor of medical devices.
